Don Giovanni bought a pair of rubber-soled shoes and put a cork tip on his cane. The blind man, with his words and sayings, darkened the day as if he were always asking: Do you think that this storm that hangs over us is about saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free explode? On his strolls with the blind man, Don Giovanni watched the black curtains being drawn, blocking the light from the Lucana lamps. So Don Giovanni accused Humberto at the district police station of soliciting in the galleria and since for the police just seeing a blind man with a yellow, worn-out straw hat is enough to consider him a beggar, they threw him out of the galleria without listening to his explanations, because after all, they were going to be the same ones used by any poor beggar caught in the act. Everybody had gotten used to that scream which shook the galleria every so often, and used to this crazy man who smiled at everyone, thinking he had misled them, as if nobody knew where the scream came from. Don Giovanni returned to saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free sameness of his days; he was the secret admirer, the only constant admirer, of the bat that acrobatically looped the loop in the high glass dome. He knew the people who used the galleria as a short cut, and watched those foreigners pass by who seemed to have fallen into a rat-trap and were in a hurry to get out. With more courage than the men, the lonely foreign women, in brightly colored dresses with large Citas Durante Una Separacion Matrimoniales, passed by like slow butterflies, bumping against the glass of the window displays. Don Giovanni was a chronicler of the galleria, a human dog parading his charms on unending strolls, without spending anything. If once in a great while he weighed himself on the public scale at the entrance, he did it to find out if he had gained any weight and with pity for the poor scale that was not only blind, but also deaf and dumb. The common days, ephemeral and ordinary, always take refuge in the gallerias and in the arcades. The rare historic days are always harbored in the auditoriums and the meeting halls. Don Giovanni, who was a man apart from the stream of history, savored the aftertaste of his days passed in the Great Savings Bank of Time that was the galleria. The galleria served to guarantee him a life with the permanence of a museum piece. Until one night. The supreme refuge against the blows of life had crumpled the man of the galleria with a suspiciously premeditated blow, since that lamp had seen him pass under her too many times not to recognize him. The pharmacy displays no longer had their Urodonal signs up; instead they had the most avant-garde cure-alls against the cold, the latest antidote, the most up-to-date decoy of pharmaceutical fancy. It was a season in which the streets assumed frigid faces and the wick of the day flickered at its earliest hour. The light of the soul was also dimmer in everybody; brains turned dull grey, the color of dead lamb. Poor souls wrapped in cloaks walked slowly, stepping carefully over the loose strands of pneumonia. Women passed by quick-stepping in flight from the cold wind, on their foreheads and temples the white wounds and scars left by the bitter cold. The Valley of the Earth was once again a land of nomads cloaked in sheepskins. Emptiness stretched ominously along the sidewalks and clothes hung crazily from the lines on the terraces. They were days in which yellowish light bulbs radiated but little light from the houses of the sick, barely illuminating the visitors gathered around the sickness. Antonio Rojas, in the depths Cosas Divertidas Para Decir En El Sitio Web De Citas a sadness brought on by the cold day which he had viewed through the eyes of a drowned man, felt overwhelmed by the first unequivocal symptom. He avoided verbalizing his suspicion to the point where he went around clad in a stupid silence. But there was no doubt that as clouds often settle on the mountain peaks, the flu had settled over him. The constant barking of the seals is probably a signal of respiratory distress; Rojas felt like a seal. He felt the sensation of being at the deep end of a pond with a rotting cadaver in it. His left eye—always the one attacked most severely by a cold—felt the weight and the soft pulpy vegetation of the detritus. He also felt like a cave of stalactites, distilled and destroyed by the dissolving humidity. As usual, he turned to his doctor, although he knew how doctors react to the flu, since all they know is how to set a leg or purge a kidney. He was amazed at their confident gestures masking the uncertainty that must have gnawed at them from underneath. He went back to writing the type of letters written by flu-stricken patients who are confined at home, including such lines as: But the effect of the dead, the mere exhalations of their dankness, the emanations of sexuality from maidens long-gone, breathed life into the air around him and Rojas went back saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free the streets without a coat, freshly groomed. At the cafe, the discussion centered upon his constant preoccupation with the flu and Rojas introduced new conceits as if he had turned them out like cigars during his convalescence. Antonio Rojas immediately took out a pencil to jot down the name of the medicine. The internal massage of an injection drives me crazy: In this wonderful aquarium of the flu, the microbes were roaring with laughter. The cafe get-together, a public hearing, that had joined three marble tables— a long sidewalk for the cups and glasses—was over on that cold day and they all went home searching for symptoms. Once again the tremors of the flu and the irregular oscillations of his pulse shimmied through his veins as if the pulsations of his heart were being choked. The flu was like a friend passing by quickly and shaking his hand roughly, leaving the knuckles smarting. There was a particular flavor, even an odor, to the experience. He had gotten into a corner of life that could be called life beyond the grave. Entering the world of half-shadows, one had to defend oneself well and quickly because, if not, just a bit beyond, one ended up in total darkness. Then he felt the cephalalgia with its half-mooned headache. His fate had caught up to him. The flu was a wristwatch ticking off its duration through the minutes and hours, tightening itself around his wrist with its bracelet of chills. The flu was a garter belt, irritating him with tight elastic bands that had lost their elasticity and with sharp buckles. He felt the great girdle of flu pressuring him, wrapping itself who knows how many times around his kidneys. The Flumaster recognized the clouds that were sending him evil waves of flu through the sky, threatening him with death. ![]() Perhaps not having the flu is being dead? He was an oviduct for the waves of flu, fertilized by it in the way that air carries fertility to the palm trees. He felt his drops of blood become heavy, thick and grainy. His memory suffered temporary embolisms from the flu, and the perception of the noise of the trolleys became acute as if magnified by his congestion. His tongue felt heavy and foreign, not his own, something crammed into his mouth. He felt like an unending moorland on which the rain was sprinkling with fine, sharp, pointed drops. He went to bed again and felt once more all the tragedy of his room, with its light bulb encrusted on his chest, a bulb like the ones laryngologists insert into your mouth. Surrounded by stucco, he felt the cold pantheonic marble mixed into his soul; he felt the earthen humidity that characterizes the oozings of the flu, a humidity in which one already senses the amalgam of earth and saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free flowers that is death. He felt like an earthworm between the sheets. He had wanted to remain a bachelor, but he felt married to the flu. Under his head the pillows felt like lifesavers. His heart palpitated with the double heartbeats that are felt only in a crisis of health. An elephant! At that moment Antonio had an agonizing sneezing attack, and he noticed that his carrier friend was not afraid of the sneezes at all; he gathered them in, hoarding the virulent microbes as in a Pfeiffer hatchery. Como la discusión se iba a agravar, Dorado, siempre tan capoteador, dijo, dirigiéndose a Antonio: He always felt optimistic during the first days of his recovery, forgetting how mortal an encounter can be with a microbe that can pass through the finest strainer in a laboratory filter. At the cafe he was acclaimed as always. Five, like a good cognac? Since the discussion was getting tense, Dorado, always dodging trouble, said to Antonio: Antonio apuntaba todas aquellas fórmulas para cuando llegase la temida gripe nueva. Antonio, puffing up with the airs of a know-it-all that he assumed when talking about the flu, added: Antonio apuntó en su cuaderno aquel nuevo producto, y con aquellos apuntes excitó a aquellos circunvecinos que percibían la fotoesfera de la conversación y que tenían sus opiniones propias. Espinosa lo preparó, haciéndole en la punta ese recuerno virginal, al que es tan grato aplicar la cerilla; y después de dar dos o tres chupadas, dijo: Antonio wrote the name of the new product in his notebook and the sight of his notes excited those around him who had perceived the aura of the conversation but had their own opinion. Fasting and eating just corn silk. He also felt their presence in the wet gutters of the streets, like stray dogs waiting to bite passersby on the legs. He much regretted it, but his microbes were dispersing themselves all over the world, just as had happened to him when he had been contaminated by someone whose microbes had scattered on his first day out. Espinosa prepared it, folding the leftover leaf into the vernal tip that is so pleasant to apply a match to, and, after drawing in two or three mouthfuls, said: Del catarro a la muerte no hay distancia. There is not much of a distance from a cold to death. A cold lets us view the disillusioning landscape of death. Rojas felt like a wet dunghill and devoted his tears—tears of a stuffed-up gargoyle—to the real suffering that shakes the world. Rojas felt as if the flu had dressed him in a top hat and frock, announcing a wake; he felt his hair turning an ashen grey, as if the flu had taken him to its altar to demonstrate to him that he was only fine and crumbled dust. He felt the unpleasant taste of iodine in his mouth; he had taken the kind of pills that create a terrible feeling of regret after their having been gulped, the ones that if fingers were long pincers, they would pull the pills back out of the depths of the stomach. What sulfur could free him from the microbe? Could it be the microbe of conscience? The subtle craftiness of his flu worried him desperately; it had left him in a death trance, soaked and saturated by feelings of farewell. He felt that his atoms had been all contaminated; they were out of shape and down-in-the mouth. He mistrusted water the most. Water writhes in shadowy pipes; delirious, rebellious, in the vortices of dark veins, it acquires a restless rancor and a feverish hysteria. The flu was the real original sin, an infectious temptation of toads up from the depths. He would have liked Turkish baths of menthol, sprays of melinite, desensitizing towels. If he could find the word that would banish the flu! Success might come by using one word against another. As he passed by, he tried to listen to a little of what the women were talking about in the darkness of the dairies. Her tonsils are as big as apples. A sickness, almost metaphysical, fraught with fear and brimming with apocalyptic circles in which humanity is a stone that drowns in their midst, anguished his heart, which was transformed into something like an invisible frog submerged in a grey afterworld. His next door neighbor, who used to chat with him after dinner, felt sorry for the loneliness of this bachelor and brought his sister to take care of him. He felt covered with erisipelas, a plastered mask with a false nose, in front of this woman who played her role of a sister of mercy, perhaps to win the best kind of certificate one can get in this life. The saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free for his supersensitivity, his plethora of symptoms and his racing pulse was his obsession with the flu… This kind of flu, with its feverish climbing tendrils, that characterize the Churrigueresque and the Baroque, gave him nightmares. With each new flu he felt that what was unpublished, modern or futuristic in his head was blocked by the sickness; he was suffering a lobotomy. The cohesion of his life was coming apart and by counting up his many colds, he realized that a large portion of his life had to be subtracted. His conclusion was that colds gangrene and when they gangrene, they kill. Like a woman who knew just by touch the amount of death present in a patient, she used to put her hand on his repulsive, fevered forehead, and Rojas felt that it was absorbing his fever; while she was squeezing his temples with her soft fingertips, it felt as if a virtuoso of fevers was playing a sweet and consoling rhythm on his forehead. The way she clamped the folds of his covers together after she had checked his forehead always felt wonderful, embellished as it was by a bit of sound from a bracelet that had just finished cooling off his fever. As a result of punctual thermometer readings, the effects of Ceregumil, the Mostel and the Vichy water, the gnawing at the bones called the flu was diminishing. He felt a decrease in the number of flu telegrams searching for their addressees throughout the world as they buzzed through him as if he were a flu telegraph pole. Everyone around him got it, but the woman kept going. The woman absolutely immune to the flu! It was never too late for a new medicine and even better if that way he was founding the family that all had urged him to form. Not wanting to form a child, or a young human being, or an old human being, their cells and atoms take advantage of the first pretext to declare a revolution of dissolution. This transcendental revelation was annunciated to him by an angel, a hatless angel, of course— it would be beneath the dignity of an angel to wear a hat. The angel admonished him not to wear a hat anymore and carried off the one he had on his hatrack. The angel spoke thus: The hat was on its way to being used only for special occasions, like umbrellas or any other gear you would wear in case of emergency. To those who would argue that taking the next logical steps would lead us to a state of animal nudity, Ramón would counter that animals are the least naked beings since they all wear coats of feathers or furs. He pictured the great figures of antiquity hatless in their marble, living comfortably in history just as if they were in their own homes. Except for the symbolic Phrygian cap of liberty, the hat came into the world along with obscurantism and the frown. They need light and fresh air to sprout and grow. There are many good reasons for humanity to go unhooded into a cloudless future. Only without a hat can a face reflect the true self so that whoever projects their image into the future with a hat on is truly pitiful. Whenever the human spirit is liberated, it has to express itself in physical variations, many of which are stranger and much more extreme than the taking off of hats. In tune with each other, symbols of privilege will disappear, and overnight they may be transformed into one. Hatlessness will rapidly move humanity forward on the road to equality. Thanks to these on-going manifestations, the result will be a world free from vanity and pretension. Hats encourage human beings to have unspoken ambitions: Looking at the hatless next to the hatted, it seemed that the hatless had already become wiser and had learned to disdain the rungs of the ladder of worldly success. Certainly, they would find the goals of life harder to attain, they would be haunted by the slander directed at the hatless, but ultimately, they would succeed… They were well on their way. The time has come to conceive of the world with bare heads, a world that, moreover, will have fewer bald people. Going hatless ends an era just as doing saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free with powdered wigs ended another. Finally, it means not leaving your saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free on the hatrack along with your hat. Without a hat and its yoke of felt and leather, Ramón felt that his power of perception was keener. He noticed that he needed less effort to be aware of everything. He realized that something was strange with the fondness of primitive people for having their pictures taken wearing top hats as a mark of status. The hat has been an artificial way to achieve status, but we are now in an era when the only way to gain it is to be smart. Off with the helmets! Ramón felt that he was traveling into new dimensions of thought and feeling and along more sincere paths of life. Let the hat be worn only when absolutely needed, just by workers in the sunny fields. Hatless, Ramón felt more attuned to life as it paraded by on the boulevards. To think that half of our foreheads have been covered! Our foreheads are lenses that capture the shining lights of the boulevards! Everybody criticized him and he began to receive bitter anonymous letters from the hat makers, even letters that threatened his life. The anonymous letters were his breakfast buns, and sometimes they came stained, suspiciously, with the glue used to make hats. Soon big SALE signs started to appear in the hat shops and Ramón would walk by those oppressive sales nervously. His head colds disappeared and his thoughts, cleared of their former congestion, flowed freely. He was able to see tops of the skyscrapers better, and sometimes shooting stars whooshed into his matted hair like sparks shooting from train wheels onto bramble-covered walls. Carefree and light headed, he was something to be seen when he met a disciple of his cause and they exchanged a quasi-military salute and a look of comradeship. The same cause united them. He kept seeing things that made him smile. The beggars let him pass by without asking for anything as if wearing a hat set them apart and made them special beyond the possibility of being labeled just beggars with hats. They regarded him contemptuously and let him go by. Puzzled, they raised their hats and scratched their matted mops awkwardly. They were only street beggars but at least they wore hats. The old beggar who made up rhymes about everything that passed by cried out: He was free of the obligation to take off his hat when a funeral procession went by. Well-meaning citizens, with their hats firmly on their heads, would look at him ready to accuse him, assuming that he was a criminal fleeing the scene of a crime. But his serenity convinced them not to act. Political candidates hated him. As soon as a man thinks that he is a politician he puts on a bowler hat, he even buys one. How he detested those hats! Wearers of bowler hats—looking like members of a society of octogenarian bathers—would look at him as if he were ineligible for the last rites; but free of worries and with nothing in his pockets, he would feel a supreme happiness, and he walked along waving his cane at the emptiness of humanity. For Ramón complemented his hatlessness with a thin rattan cane that gave him one more antenna to keep firmly in touch with reality as he wandered through the world. His slim, delicate cane had a saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free of humor; it was like a wand, cut from a tree, with which one flirts with life while strolling contentedly through its outskirts. Now that his hands no longer suffered the torture of holding on to his hat, they could enjoy the challenge of the cane, twirling, riposting, parrying. The exhilarating movements of his cane reflected the freedom of his shining head, liberated from its penitential hat. Going hatless with his spirited cane was for Ramón the epitome of freedom as he wandered happily through the bazaars of life. While strolling through the parks, Ramón noticed that all the daring lovers who made love under the trees were haters of hats. He felt grander than Charlot, because Charlot had to use a hat, even though he just used it as a prop. He, who had never believed that there was any ideal worth dying for, would have died rather than wear a hat again. He thought that the most arbitrary act committed by Mussolini was to order the obligatory use of hats in order to save the capelleria industry. He envisioned the birth of a bold new party guaranteed to be asceptic, free of fanaticisms and with simple statutes: He decided it was necessary to assemble all the newly-born hat haters who would gather freely in an act to consecrate hatlessness and he published a proclamation announcing a great parade. In response, on the esplanade reserved for the occasion, young hat haters formed in long lines. They were happy to face the future without preconceptions, without subscribing to the fanatical schemes of any present creed, ready to accept whatever each dawn saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free announce. Genuine hat haters! It was a pleasure to see crowds of unselfish young people who were ready for anything, determined to act for the sake of acting, raise their voices for the sake of raising them, saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free for the sake of cheering. We are all climbing a path towards the light, a sunlit path that will take us into a bright tomorrow; in fact, by taking it we will have brought tomorrow closer to today. We are ready to respond to the first summons no matter what it calls us to. A response both innocent and noble. A primordial freedom is but one step away from us. In Aragón he understood that those men with a handkerchief tied around their heads were good men from Aragón who had to sing the jota; in Andalucía, it was easy for him to understand that wearing the Andalusian hat, with its upturned brim, the Saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free, with their stubborn straight-forward cockiness, had to be thinking about bulls. Some hat haters from one of the provinces came to him to complain about a governor who had given the order to put all the hat haters in jail, and for twenty four hours they remained behind bars, until orders came from the central government to free them. He kept on forming committees of hat haters. They had a meeting in the Café Colón. There, they were heroic and eloquent. Here, hat haters were lean young men, with tightly folded smiles. But they were aware of the modern horizons already mirrored in their empty but fertile land. For Ramón it was a pleasant experience to stroll through the streets that now seemed dazzling, as he was accompanied by youngsters who had been awaiting the launching of a new idea, eager to throw themselves behind it and hurl it at the porches of the old institutions. The hatless ones were teams of honorable men propelling this new initiative with their foreheads; it was forbidden to them to advance the idea with anything but their head. In Galicia he was surprised to find well-knit groups of hatless followers. They would know that there was much to be done in their own backyard. They needed to instill in others a faith in their own land. These meetings in the open air took on a religious flavor. All became aware that they were in a gathering surrounded by nature, a feeling like that sought after in the tall naves of the churches; this similarity gave an antidogmatic religiosity to the new beliefs. In their old medieval Castilian the promises sounded even better: In a state that we saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free call one of rebirth, the novice is the one who can most effectively engage the future and redress the balance of life and nature. The snow, impossible to ward off with umbrellas, had the effect of a consecration upon him. He found new advantages in going hatless. The hat makers kept persecuting him and he was afraid that they might pay somebody to murder him. Ah, saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free then, if he could become the martyr of the hatless movement, the redeemer in death—never again would hats be used! He was a bit nostalgic for those hat counters where pleasant and obliging salesmen tell you how becoming all those hats are that you try on, when saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free are not becoming at all. If he ever needed a hat, he would have to send a friend with the same size head to get one. Because no one ever knows, someday he might have to ignore his conviction and conform, to go through the torment of being fitted with a threatening instrument of torture, a crown of thorns. He smiled ironically when he saw the bashful hatless ones passing by, with their hats in their hands like cowardly discus throwers holding their discs hesitantly, lacking the courage to heave them. They are obstacles between us and an ideal state of justice and exhilarating spontaneity; they prevent us from entering a world where artifices are useless and in which one renounces authority over the worthless. They trembled with fear thinking that they would be denied the vain privileges and respect that convention bestows on those who wear hats. Those who greeted him in the street greeted him as if he were stealing half of their greeting from them. He knew that envy of a regained freedom is the most ferocious of envies and that human arbitrariness is greater during the last days than the first days of the month and greater on the eve of election days than after the results are out. One day he got a better idea of what human foolishness can do. He bumped into a vain man, the worst beast in creation. We are from different species. In his throat Ramón felt the taste of bitter coffee. It was as if he had seen someone go by who had tried to destroy his diogenic hatless happiness. When they saw him, they became very alert in order to shelter him from any unpleasant remarks that might issue from theaters or outdoor cafes. Ramón had dreams fit for the hatless. In those dreams he saw judges wearing inkwell-like berettas who sentenced him saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free death. In one of those dreams, he was awakened by the brothers of Peace and Charity announcing to him that his last hours had arrived, and Ramón faced the unique and splendid dawn of those condemned to death. To be without a head was even better than to be without a hat! In all the checkrooms, when they handed him back his coat and cane, they added a wide brimmed hat. If he had accepted all those hats that he had been given automatically, he could have set up a profitable business. Once there was a great scandal in front of a checkroom counter given to this practice. The only thing that caused him remorse was that in his closet he had a beret, because after all, there are fast auto rides for which you need a fitted helmet to avoid having your hair flutter around and entangle the scenery. He looked so rustic, so out of style and so out of touch with himself, that he threw it aside. He went overseas without a hat as if he were just taking a streetcar. In Buenos Aires no one understood hatlessness. Since they all had money to spare, it was necessary, absolutely necessary, to buy a hat: How cou1d anyone dare not wear one? On the streets people circled him as if they were trying to figure out the patterns of the animal hidden in the lines of a picture puzzle. He was afraid of being trapped into wearing a hat, or risking strangulation with a waggling measuring tape for refusing to wear one. It was hard for him to go for a walk. The hat shop doors looked at him with hollow, angry eyes; and many times the shop owner would come to the door hostile to the appearance of one who was such an unpleasant symptom of the times. To top it off, he found many spot remover stands, and the Japanese who ran them stared at him fiercely. If they could, they would have made him swallow one of the poisons used to clean the hats. Walking along Avenida de Julio through the colonnades where the city greets the immigrant and where the immigrant gets dressed from head to toe, he saw hats floating around, the prices marked on striking circular medallions that moved with the wind. The owners of the clothing stores praised their merchandise and, when Ramón passed by, they offered him hats that seemed to have surfaced from a shipwreck and been stranded on the beach. No one around him understood that the greatest courtesy he could offer the city was to go hatless, greeting everybody that way, in one long, sustained greeting. In the midst of a society full of prejudices created by wealth, it was necessary to plant whimsical hatlessness, the innocent happiness of the Garden of Eden, so that a newborn will live free in the middle of that splendid new world. One day he was visited by a hat shop owner. With a hat humanity wears a vulgar tragicomic tone. Without a hat its spirit will be humorous and understanding. Ramón crossed the Andes from Buenos Aires without a hat. The Andes without a hat! He went to Chile stuffed into one of the small cars of the Trans-Andean train and in Santiago meandered along the streets, as if he had gone to observe some mines or some hydraulic works under construction. Even though they wore rags befitting their name, they all wore wide-brimmed hats. Ramón passed over the Andes again when he returned to Buenos Aires, and he greeted them with a wave of his hand. In his excursions to Paraguay or Bahía Blanca, without a hat, he felt at home; each day the world appeared to him more like a huge rambling house with long corridors. Saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free would have had a very different idea of America if he had traveled it with a hat. This way it was transformed into a simple trip through lands surrounded by water. Sometimes, as a strong wind whipped through the city, all the hats would fly into the air, and Ramón laughed at the grotesque hat hunt as the hats fled and disappeared under streetcars and automobiles. Although a man without a hat flaunts the law, and society—whatever that means—regards him as a heretic, Sarah, a Jewish girl, started to pay attention to him. Sarah was an orphan, but she had eighteen uncles who took care of her and in strict rotation took turns giving her advice. Everybody found out about her relationship with Ramón because she was going steady with the most notorious hat hater. She betrayed his discretion as her love was open to the world, exposed from every angle. That way she proved the courage of her heart and her happiness grew. One day Sarah asked him to formalize the relationship by going to see her eighteen uncles. Ramón was surprised when he observed that those kind men, with their long beards, used hats inside the house, according to the old Jewish law. They all looked at him, startled at the discourtesy of his bared head, and treated him coolly, although they did give him a glass of wine in a gesture of friendship fitting for a non-blood relative. It was a staircase wide enough for the elevator in the shape of a sofa that rose through its middle. There was never anybody going up or down so it was quite clear that this was truly a palace. On the staircase dukes and countesses wearing flat hats had fallen to their deaths, thus flattening their hats even more. It was tempting to knock at the mezzanine door where three young widows, the Cerviños, coexisted in full complicity. It looked as though the earth under the plants might be hiding earthworms, moist, well-nourished and probably as white as guinea pigs. When one rang the doorbell there was no response. But after awhile Eduvigis, the old servant, would appear, giving an impression that what had come to open the door was a skirted round table trailing threads and crochet needles. Behind her appeared the little old dog with its hundred nipples, a dog that carried on a sordid relationship with the one-eyed doorbell switch. The couple was strange, marked by a harmony of unusual and attractive gestures. Fermín, the husband, possessed an unforgettable kindness that just poured forth from his always impeccable leisure suit. Like all of us, as parents of a child with special needs, we worry about what will happen to our children when we are gone. My daughter, Izzy, who has significant disabilities will always require care, and will never be able to live independently. This was the main reason why I setup a special needs trust for my daughter. The trust allows for money to be held in an account for the use of my daughter without affecting her ability to receive Supplemental Security Income SSI. Luckily, both my ex-wife and I were on the same page when it came to preparing for our daughters future. In addition to a special needs trust, I also set up a living trust. An added difficulty was that I was going through a divorce at the time. For myself, there was the decision of whether to set up a living trust or a will. A will can be cheaper and easier on you, but the living trust is easier on your heirs. All of my assets will go into the living trust when I die. Those assets will be easier and quicker to access, since they will not have to go through probate. This can be saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free difference of only a couple of weeks for the living trust as opposed to possibly months for a will. How much will all this cost? There were three meetings with the attorney. To prepare for the second meeting, there are certain things you should consider: Funding can come from many sources. When we both pass, the assets of our living trusts will go into the special needs trust. Those assets will include personal property, retirement accounts and most importantly insurance policies. Relatives can also contribute, but we have told them not to list Izzy, individually, but instead us or her special needs trust. To make things simple, we were given a sheet of paper with how to designate beneficiaries. Depending on the type of asset, you may want the beneficiary to be your living trust or a particular person. Once the special needs trust is funded, what do you do with it? The money can be used for anything that Izzy needs outside of what must be paid for with SSI. One of my main concerns has always been if she needs to be put into a care facility, I want there to be options for her. This trust will provide that. We have also stipulated that whoever is taking care of her, can take a monthly stipend. We have set a predefined amount for this stipend. Finally, what happens when Izzy passes? Whatever money is left in the special needs trust can be designated however the parents wish. For us, the money will go to whomever was taking care of Izzy at her passing. However, trust law continues to change and in some cases there may be a requirement to pay back Medicaid. This is where working with an attorney who is knowledgeable about special needs trusts is important. Trusts are fluid documents, everything is not set in stone. I can make changes as situations change. Some of those changes will, however, mean meeting with a lawyer. I do feel much safer now that we have a plan in place and Izzy will be taken care of when I am gone. Part 2: Options for Planning. Are you an individual, business or organization that would like to partner with P2P-CO? Discussing your own vulnerability or mortality is never an enjoyable subject, but it is a necessary conversation for all families to have to ensure loved ones are protected and provided for in the future. This is never more crucial saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free with respect to a family member with special needs. Estate planning for families with special needs, also known as special needs planning, determines in advance how your loved one will be cared for without you in addition to more typical issues such as the distribution of property. Public benefit programs like Medicaid are often a lifeline for an individual with special needs, and a key factor determining whether saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free person can live a decent, fulfilling, and productive life. Thus, one of the most important aspects of special needs planning is maintaining public benefits eligibility. A SNT is a legal document created for an individual with special needs in which a Trustee manages assets for the individual to ensure he or she can remain eligible for public benefits. If you provide financially for your loved one with special needs or plan to leave a financial gift for him or her after your death, a SNT is an essential piece of your estate plan. This allows assets to be set aside for supplemental expenses not covered by public benefit programs, such as education expenses, vacations, hobbies, or certain medical expenses. There are several different types of SNTs. An individual first-party SNT, also called a self-settled SNT, is used when the individual with special needs has received or will receive substantial assets that would ordinarily disqualify him or her from public benefit programs, such as a person injury settlement. An individual third-party SNT is used when a third party saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free to provide for an individual with special needs, such as an inheritance from a family member. Finally, there are pooled trusts, in which a nonprofit organization sets up and administers a master SNT for multiple individuals with special needs, combining their assets and investing them saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free. This document is essential if the individual with special needs cannot advocate for him or herself. Every situation is different. Part 1: Getting Started. Planning begins with our values. Values are from our parents, traditions, cultures, education, friends and life experiences. My saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free were deceased when my son, Eli, was born, but their values guided me to set and achieve goals for myself as his Mom and the life outcomes I wanted for him. At age 3, Eli was on the path to 36 diagnoses, was spectacularly self-injurious and fitfully slept 4 hours daily. My goal was to keep him alive while experiencing the most quality life possible. I set and, as circumstances changed, reset goals and somehow mustered the discipline to work towards achievement. That was the behavior my parents expected of me. When Eli was 3, an estate planning attorney, Stanton Rosenbaum, also a parent, encouraged me to plan. He asked who would care for Eli if I became incapacitated. The Letter of Intent is dually purposed. It is not just instructions for others. It is how we live in the here and now to achieve our desired goals. The Letter of Intent had goals for fulfilling lives for both of us. I was so surprised when I re-read his age 3 letter and realized we had already achieved many of our future outcomes. He, like everyone, changes. The letter describes how best to support Eli and what he expects. Eli expects people to be promise-keepers, respect him and be nice to him. He has his own work goals and is disciplined towards achievement. Eli wants to be with patient, compassionate people with realistic expectations. I have met thousands of parents over nearly 30 years. Every family is unique with their own terrors and triumphs, behaviors and beliefs, visions and values. P2P parents are motivated to do their best for their families. Planning is an opportunity to put our motivations into actions. Planning is the process of forethought of what we want to occur, now and in the future. Planning reflects your goals and values. You can share your ideas with us by emailing: Although it is a joyful time, our stress levels can go soaring! Why is it so hard for us to take care of ourselves when we are so good at taking care of others? We are both caregivers for our multiple kids with disabilities, have busy jobs outside that, and other commitments. We have to be pretty intentional to take time for self-care. Our solution? What do I mean by that? For us an emergency is defined as life or limb — lots of blood spewing, a bone poking out, or someone turning blue—in other words, if you need an ambulance, ok. This requires some discipline. So, what can you do on your mini-vacation? Got 2 hours? This one is like pure luxury! How often do we get 2 hours? Not very often. But be intentional saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free you do. Whatever gives you joy, rest, and energy, try to be intentional about some time to do that during this busy season. Try to find at least 10 minutes a day for yourself, 30 minutes a week just for you, and if you can swing it, sometime over these next few weeks grab those minutes and savor some time to take care of yourself. We know that taking care of ourselves helps us to be better caretakers for others and gives us the strength to last through this journey of parenting our sons and daughters. We stop at the deli, where kids get a free cookie, and Mr. Bill comes around to help us out when we are done. He makes sure to put something light in a bag for Lewis so he can help carry the groceries to the car. Hi, Lewis! Looking back, It is hard to imagine how much has changed in 30 years. I will never forget that first winter, those first 8 or 9 months when I was essentially trapped at home with a medically fragile, immune suppressed, adorable and very sick little boy and how isolated I felt. No parent to parent organizations and it was hard to find support. Eventually my son was healthy enough to have therapy at a rehab center and I attended a group there. No internet, no cell phones, and no social media. Mostly I was stuck at home. I could have a life! I was a big fan of pagers! Still looking for ways that families could connect with one another. Support groups were fine, and I still attended them when I could find them and referred families. But could we do more? The internet was growing and many pieces of the puzzle were starting saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free come together. Some forward thinking folks started exploring the idea of using personal computers to connect parents. Their primary function was creating and supporting groups of parents. The P2P-CO group became my lifeline. Being able to connect no matter the time of day or night meant so much to me! Through technology we are now connected with over families across Colorado and with a nation-wide network of Parent to Parent organizations. Listservs are very old technology. My heart is thankful everyday. For my family. For my larger disability family. For the technology that continues to be a tool to help me stay connected. I will never forget that first winter and how isolated I felt. At Parent to Parent, we hear almost daily, how support from another parent helps a new parent saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free and feel less alone. Life is so much better now. True Gratitude. We see others that we judge to be less fortunate than us and use that as an opportunity to feel grateful. How do you still find gratitude in your heart when your world is crumbling? How do we find gratefulness in the absence of health, family, and material possessions? What do they have to be thankful for? True gratitude that can withstand the most challenging and heartbreaking situations imaginable comes from an acknowledgement that there is a higher purpose in all of this. That the messy threads of our life are being woven together by a masterful Artist who sees the whole picture not our limited perspective. That I can choose gratitude. I remember as if it were yesterday … the first saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free of preschool for my daughter. There were so many questions and unknowns. Would she ever be able to talk? Would she learn? Would she have friends? Am I a good parent? How can I continue to be a strong advocate and have a positive relationship with the people at the school? Will our family be able to survive with all of the added stress and responsibilities of having a child with a disability? Now I know that focusing on equality of opportunity and full participation, not only in school, but also in life, was one of the most important things I could have done. My daughter has grown up knowing that if saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free wants to do or try something, we will figure it out and will try to make a way for it to happen. Helping her learn to be independent in high school with getting herself out of bed and ready for the day, getting herself to the bus in the morning, and working on getting the night time routine done in a reasonable amount of time have been some of the best precursors to prepare her for getting up and ready for a part-time job, figuring out her transportation issues for the day, and making checklists for all sorts of tasks. When the time came for her to be finished with school, I felt as if I had been released from jail … really a prison of my own making. During her school years I was filled with stress, worry, and questions. What if she is lonely throughout her lifetime? As she finished, I realized that the answers had come through patience and persistence. I had done what needed to be done throughout her life. I had facilitated opportunities for her to have lasting friendships. I had helped teach her how to advocate for herself and get what she wants and needs. Fast forward to today — 19 years after that first day of preschool. The questions were big but the answers did come. Year after year the questions became bigger and sometimes harder. And those newer, bigger questions were also answered — sometimes with surprises, sometimes with disappointment, and sometimes with more questions. As she approached graduation from high school three years ago, there were so many new and different questions. My daughter is now a young adult with activities and interests of her own. She continues to have new experiences and become more independent. Of course there are still questions. There are still times when I wonder what the future saliendo con magic 8 ball answers free be. We continued to talk about other ways to make a difference. Did she chain herself to a door? Well, mostly she used the skills she had strengths in: She refused to receive a leadership award publicly when the venue was inaccessible and instead sat in solidarity with others with mobility impairments who watched from closed circuit television in the basement. I was there that day and was delighted to see other students as well as faculty join them in the basement. She was often part of the team meeting in administrator offices, offering up solutions, presenting demands. They were a small but mighty group of dedicated students! By the end of her 4 years there they had accomplished their main goals of getting front door accessibility to the student center and a lift for wheelchair users up to the art and piano studios on the second floor of the art building whose classrooms could not be easily moved. I am proud of the legacy she and her team left. We each have a different amount of time, energy, skills and talents to dedicate to any cause.
